1st XI Captain's Report 2010

Vandals set about 2010 in a positive vein, winning their first three matches to equal their total wins
for all of 2009. Much of the early success was due to Scott Baker’s off spin, taking 5-33 against
Kempton and 5-25 against Guildford City the following week. Baker was ably assisted by Garry
Foreman who also scored useful runs early in the year. Having got off to such a good start,
promotion was on the agenda rather than the usual scrap to avoid relegation.
There were highs and lows throughout the year, with close wins over Hampton Wick Royal and
Ripley and convincing wins against Lingfield, Wallington, Horley and Chobhami In truth however,
our promotion hopes faltered against our closest rivals. Poor performances against Merrow and
Sanderstead, an unlucky toss against West End Esher and no rub of the green against Oxted &
Limpsfield are where the points went begging, and the less said about a horrible day at Byfleet the
better,
The improvement in batting showed this year, with five different players registering half
centuries. Leading the way was Ross Goodwin, who’s 438 runs were vital at the top of the innings,
but valuable contributions were made by Shabbi Iqbal, Seb Hall and the departing Garry Foreman
who will be missed with both bat and ball in 2011.

The bowling was again our main strength. Scott Baker improved his spin bowling beyond
recognition and fully deserved his 33 wickets, Will Powell cramped the batsmen for space
throughout the year and really got the ball to spit off a length, Garry Foreman was his usual miserly
self and Luke Bentley bowled too.
The real star ofthe year though was Jon Powell who, after a slow start to the campaign (despite
what he claims was a rigorous fitness schedule throughout the winter) really caught alight in June
and just didn`t stop taking wickets. His six five wicket hauls an a total of 46 wickets was an
indication that on his day that he was unplayable.
Looking ahead to 201 1, promotion will again be the aim and with reinforcements on their way
we’re hopeful of achieving that. With many of the same players returning too, skipper Seb Hall
should have plenty of options. He will be hoping for much of the same from the Powell’s, Baker
and Goodwin and with “bounce back" years from John Hall and Bentley, Vandals have everything
they need to go one place better.
