Fentons combine to open the Newdigate

Brothers in arms combine for the win

Another Saturday and another delayed start... heavy rain in the morning and continuing drizzle meant the chance for some to watch the champions elect comfortably dispatch Burnley, before a real contest started. Newdigate's excellent covers and good work from everyone (including even Woo!) meant that in the end, a 38 over aside game was possible.

They say that brothers are alike, but I'm not so sure that's true at the Vandals. Take the Fentons... Mark was opening the bowling having fully recovered from the broken finger nail that kept him out of 8 weeks of the season, while Dan was keeping wicket for the 3rd week with a broken thumb and relishing the chance of picking up a few of Aman's exocet throws to his bootlaces!

Fluffer, opened up charging down the hill, and accounted for Kurobosa who dragged on and then Dunkerley clean bowled, before Oogy - not so much charging as struggling up the hill (perhaps showing that some brothers are alike) - swung one inside an overly ambitious drive from Arnold, 41-3. At the other end, Newdigate's skipper Davies was undeterred, continuing to play aggressively to anything full after surviving an lbw that Umpire Waldock deemed to be missing leg (for what it's worth, it was also missing off). The change bowlers came on and immediately did the trick, Scotty Baker finally finding Waldock's missing index finger and Seb "remedial Jonny" Harrower got Davies to splice one to Drew "safe hands" Churchwell at square leg. 64 for 5.

From there, the Vandals intensity dropped a little, and coupled with some good/ludicrous running between the wickets, the Kehl brothers (yes, more brothers) set about restoring the home sides innings, they'd got up to 110 before DiscO-Dawg Powell found the edge of Kehl jnr's bat much to the surprise of Fenton snr who took the catch standing up. Kehl the elder unfortunately then thought he was still running with his athletic little brother rather than 2 gentlemen of a more vintage persuasion. After retiring one hurt with a hamstring injury trying to take a very tight single, he then managed to sell Cooper down the river, who was easily run out by Tough Fenton. The end of the innings was a bit laboured in truth, there was a second run out which always looked on when Goldsmith reappeared with a runner before Fluffer - back to finish his spell - bowled Kehl well who fell to sound the death knell of his innings of excel-lence. It only remained for Woosie to claim the number 11's wicket with the perfect delivery to a tailender, a long hop which was smashed at Aman at short cover who made a difficult catch look very easy. Newdigate 141 all out, Mark the standout performer with 8-1-21-3.

142 on a good wicket with a fast scoring outfield should be easy, but this is the Vandals! Tough Fenton and Sambo opened up and set about knocking them off in quick time, TF in particular was in the mood, taking Kehl jnr for a number of boundaries in a sprightly opening partnership of 42 which ended in a 3rd run out of the day when Sam found himself short of his ground. In came Seb to consolidate things while TF carried on his merry way dispatching boundaries at will and bringing up and excellent 50 in no time. Unfortunately, Dan was bowled by Dunkerley's left arm seam which we were finding hard to get away. Seb's somewhat laboured innings came to an end when he edged to the "injured" Goldsmith who leapt, salmon like, to his right and held a one handed screamer, 89-3. In strode Connor to pair up with Aman - the pair who had put on 197 in the cup game earlier in the season - but this was to be a different partnership. When Haynes, the home side's 5th bowler was dispatched for 4, 6 by Aman in his first over, the V's were 106-4 after 26 overs, but we got bogged down and only scored 7 runs in the next 6 overs against some tidy bowling from Haynes and Lucas. Connor fell for 5 which started a mini collapse, he was quickly followed by Drew and Woo leaving us on 120-6 with just 5 overs of the 38 left. Out strode Fluffer who decided - much like his tougher brother - to attack, and after striking a couple of good boundaries he was castled by Lucas, leaving DiscO and Aman to get the last 10 runs from 2 overs. 5 from the penultimate over left Aman on strike: a dot ball preceded a powerful 4 to tie the scores, before he finished it of in grand style pumping it over midwicket for 6 to leave himself 40*

This marks our 5th win in the last 8, the other 3 being a draw (1 run short of a win), a cancellation and a 3 run loss. Good signs for the end of this season and beyond!
