Vandals fight back from the (Newdi) gates of Kehl

Jonny Powell2 Aug 2022 - 10:53

1s stretch unbeaten run to 6

Vandals arrived at Newdigate full of confidence and on a balmy day were surprised to see that there appeared to be a localised cloud burst which had affected just the square at the picturesque Newdigate ground. The toss it appeared would become more important than we thought, with both sides surely wanting to take advantage of the moisture in the wicket... Sam called wrong and we were very quickly asked to bat.

The usual opening partnership of Fenton and Buckell predictably found life tough, Dan falling for 4 edging A.Kehl to S.Kehl. The V's top order struggled mightily against the diminutive Kehl on a wicket that was keeping low and nibbling. Connor was bowled for 0, Sam unluckily given lbw for 5 off his inside edge, and Seb (10), Fluffer (0) and Arthur (5) were all castled to give Kehl 6 wickets in no time. Woo fell after playing on to Dunkerley and the V's found themselves in a massive hole at 45-7.

Fortunately, they still had the reassuring figure of Aman Singh at the crease, and he and the Jonny Powell set about trying to rescue the situation. A nuggety partnership ensued, with both Aman and Jonny digging deep to see off Kehl and gradually creep the score upto something we could defend. When Jonny (19 from 70 balls) eventually succumbed to Davies after ably showing off 1 of the 4 dimensions he has to his game, the partnership had added 54 and with the help of Scotty Baker (12), Aman pushed the score up to a useful 143-9, ending 65 not out from 113 balls.

Tea was taken and thoughts were that we had a decent score on the board. Oscar and Scotty opened the bowling together with the old ball, putting to bed their "Diskgate" falling out from a year ago. Baker - as is his wont - started by being hit for 3 boundaries by Jones, before turning one onto his inside edge, with Connor taking an unnecessarily acrobatic catch at short leg. Scotty had Haynes caught behind and Keay stumped, aiming a violent hack somewhere towards Dorking to leave the home side 22-3.

Dunkerley and Davies came together in what looked to be a match defining partnership, Davies showing good aggression and Dunkerley dropping anchor to get the score up to 90-3, but when they both fell within the space of 4 balls, the Vs scented blood against the league's bottom side. Jonny took his second wicket, bowling S.Kehl and Fluffer returned to knock over Arnold. Woosie then had a very brief spell which included the wicket of Warne before graciously withdrawing himself from the attack in favour of his fitter younger brother who came back to take 2 in 2 at the end of the innings to wrap up a 10 run win, which coupled with Horley's draw with Lingfield, moves us into the promotion places.
